| In the first chapter of Revelation, John is in exile on the island of Patmos when he receives a vision from Jesus. John is directed to address the churches in Asia who are in various states of obedience, compromise, and persecution. Even though John's audience is those churches in particular, he gives this message to all readers: |
"Blessed is the one who reads the words of this prophecy, and blessed are those who hear it and take to heart what is written in it, because the time is near" (Rev.1:3 NIV).
